A fire

Posted by Leena (Joensuu, Finland) on 7 January 2009 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

A next work was to put fire both outside and to an oven of sauna.

A red building behind Lauri is not sauna but our "aitta" for sleeping of visitors. Welcome!

I was a little worried about my camera and that frost, but only my fingers were cold, the camera managed very well, a poor quality of this photo is not a camera`s blame, only a blame of my fingers and coldness :)

Sun rises 9:25 and sets 14:50. Length of day is 5 h 25 min

Thank you very much for your visits and comments !

Kaylin Idora from New Orleans, United States

I still really like this shot even thought your fingers "messed" it up ;)

The length of the day is only 5 hours ... oh dear I'll be in Helsinki in March, I hope it lightens up by then!

Kiitos Leena!!

To Finland in March! Days are lengthening now about 3 -5 minutes a day, so, they really are much longer in March, it depends also, where you are going, to Helsinki or to Lapland, a difference in the length of a day is enormous between them.
I am waiting for March because it is a best month in this part of Finland for skiing on the lakes in a sunshine, what start to warmth already a little bit during a couple of hours.
Welcome to Finland !

Thanks Leena!!! :D I'll be in Helsinki and this will be my second time to Finland.

I like your country a lot, and have a few Finnish friends. The last time I was there was in April, the weather was still good at that time. I hope that in March maybe I'll luck up and get sunny days :)

Kipiis! (Cheers, is that how it's spelled? Sorry if it is not I'm still learning ;) )

@Kaylin Idora: You are experienced then and know every foolish thing about us !
And you will come again, that sounds good enough :)

babzy from Besançon, France

the red house is beautiful and the fire warms me through the image ;)

7 Jan 2009 8:17am

@babzy: My husband made it by yourself and quite alone, I tried to be of course for help, but I think, I was mostly only worried to death because of him, not very helpful, but he managed well and he is very proud about it and i was relieved, when it was ready!
We make food during summer by this fire place, just for fun and joy, being together around it and outside
after a long winter, when we have to be inside most of time.

Arija from Australia

Such beautiful guest accommodation and a sauna as well! I do miss a good sauna and a dip in the lake afterwards, or as my father did, a roll in the snow.
A lovely winter post.

7 Jan 2009 9:29am

@Arija: I have done both also, now children roll in the snow :)
thank you for your visit here faraway!

Judy from Brooksville-Florida,, United States

I see a small fire to the left of the big one ... is that carried to the sauna?
Your guest quarters are BEAUTIFUL...I'd be very happy there (in summer). *smile*

7 Jan 2009 11:47am

@Judy: No, sauna has got the own oven inside.
We have different stoves in a saunafor electric heated sauna and for wood-heated sauna.
If you click yellow links, you can see those stoves and choice one :)
It must be a little difficult to understand, but come and see :)
We have the wood-heated stove in sauna of our summer cottage and the electric -heated in sauna of our town house and most of Finns have saunas like we have., they have sauna even in their apartments.

Elena Kotrotsou from Drossia, Greece

It's nice if you can warm yourselves! Maybe Leena is the same as Elena, I don't know, but they have the same letters!!

7 Jan 2009 11:51am

@Elena Kotrotsou: That fire was this time more fo ra joy of our eyes than warming because being near a fire with modern clothes, can be dangerous, they are so easily burning. But sauna was warm :)

Ruth from United States

It's a beautiful aitta. We want to make my studio an aitta - is that the right word - so that guests can stay there.

The fireplace is just wonderful too.

LeenaM from Joensuu, Finland

Your studio will be just a perfect aitta !
And you can use it as studio as well when visitors are not there.
I call this very useful fireplace during summer time "rumilus" meaning a little like "clumsy creature" :)
Here you can see different kind of aittas

JUdy from United States

What a great place to stay and the fire looks so inviting. My camera works okay out in the cold but sometimes I get a blue line on the side of a picture. My fingers are really the only thing that get cold so I try taking pictures with my mittens on and I've gotten pretty good at it.

7 Jan 2009 1:31pm

@JUdy: Unfortunately I had "an axe", like ittens, but made from a soft leather and too clumsy for a camera, i had to work with it barehanded.
My small Pentax camera was broken once in a too hard frost.
thank you for stopping b, judy!

Jeff from Pembroke Dock, United Kingdom

Thanks for a little bit of warmth at last...Perhaps tomorrow we will see you rolling in the snow ??. ;>))

7 Jan 2009 2:30pm

@Jeff: I thought, you needed that fire, but I leave this rolling until you will come here and can do it also!

Eleftheria! from Athens, Greece

All these photos are so beautiful!

7 Jan 2009 4:02pm

@Eleftheria!: thank you, dear :)

Judi from Canada

Hei Leena
What a lovely spot you have. The house is adorable I love thanks Judithe log work and the colour...and for guests...what a wonderful spot.
We sure do love the sauna.
Thank you for stopping by and the New Year's wishes. All the best to your family also.
Lovely picture and keep warm! It has been about -6C this week though if feels colder. Today the snow is just blowing and its quite wintery...brrrrrr...but spring is on its way at some point.
Have a great day
Judi

7 Jan 2009 5:37pm

@Judi: Many thanks Judi for coming by, comment and wishes!
More light every day makes a life quality better even we can not think a spring for a long time!

Peter from Paris, France

... and there are even hotel rooms with sauna! Did you do any ice-hole bath? (I have been forced to it a few times!) Your summer (year-around?) place seems just marvelous!

7 Jan 2009 9:40pm

@Peter: Peter, I have done an ice swimming some times, but not any more. and how did you feel after that forcing - not very pleasant, I suppose! I promise, that I will not force any foreign visitors even to sauna :)

Stephen Phillips from San Francisco, United States

That is a very charming guest cottage, Leena. and the sauna sounds like a perfect idea...

8 Jan 2009 12:19am

@Stephen Phillips: Thank you Stephen!

Kyle from Manhattan KS, United States

Thank you !

Ruth from United States

Yes, I was thinking the same, I can still use it as a studio.

Those are cute aittas! We are thinking to add some like that to our cottage also. Just for sleeping.

An inviting and friendly photo! Would love to be close to the fire. The red house in the background is a nice touch as well.
