A Great Wall day / China

Posted by Leena (Joensuu, Finland) on 15 May 2009 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

Walking on The Great Wall was nothing else but GREAT in spite of fog and a strong wind, what rather made me think all those men during centuries here, builders and soldiers.

"The Great Wall of China; literally "The long wall of 10,000 Li (里)"[1]) is a series of stone and earthen fortifications in northern China, built, rebuilt, and maintained between the 5th century BC and the 16th century to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire from Xiongnu attacks during various successive dynasties. Since the 5th century BC, several walls have been built that were referred to as the Great Wall. One of the most famous is the wall built between 220–206 BC by the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang. Little of that wall remains; it lay farther north than the current wall, which was built during the Ming Dynasty.

A more recent archaeological survey using advanced technologies points out that the entire Great Wall, with all of its branches, stretches for 8,851.8 km (5,500.3 mi). At its peak, the Ming Wall was guarded by more than one million men. It has been estimated that somewhere in the range of 2 to 3 million Chinese died as part of the centuries-long project of building the wall."

I have had the chance to see the same things for real, but your photos are amazing, especially this one of the wall! It's difficult to find a blue sky around Bejing, but in this case the hazy weather really adds somthing to your photo! The colours are fantastic!

Thank you for your kind comments!
Chineses keep saying, that a man is not a real man, before he has walked on The Great Wall.
You can guess, that we saw there also a plenty of boys - even very small ones :)

What a wonderful shot, Leena! It must have been very thrilling to see that special and unique structure with your own eyes... even if you shared the view with a lot of others at the same time. What I love most is how prominently the Chinese flag stands out... that crimson symbol that means so many different things to so many different people on this planet! Thanks for sharing your terrific picture with us!!
