Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, built 652 / Xian

Posted by Leena (Joensuu, Finland) on 28 May 2009 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

And our stupendous guide with a flag of Finland :)
The pagoda is the brick-constructed, rebuilt in 704, during the Tang Dynasty. Although the pagoda is built completely of stone, it is decorated with stylized wooden column motifs
The history of this building is interesting:
"The great Chinese monk Xuanzhuang requested to build a pagoda to keep all the Buddhist sutras that he brought in from India. The Wild Goose Pagoda became a place for keeping Buddhist scriptures that he translated from Sanskrit."
( a source HERE )
And he was working with those sutras on the top floor of this bagoda.

Thank you very much for your visits and comments !

Interesting story and shot. The Pagoda looks like a giant tea-pot to me! Maybe that's the British in me! ;o). I love the colours you have, really rich.. do you process these shots? I'd love to produce the depth you do.

@MrsAmber: Thank you for your interest!
I have used only a free software PhotoScape mostly increasing contrast and clicking "backlight", this has been enough. I like that program.

So long ago...what an amazing building with so much history. I can't imagine the work involved in translating the sanskrit.
Love your picture with your guide too.
Have a wonderful time with your family and especially your grandchildren.
